The Author

Author Diana Tonnessen

I’m a journalist and magazine editor whose feature articles on health, medicine, parenting, and nutrition have appeared in Health, Glamour, Self, Parents, Plum, and Working Mother, among others. I’m also the author or collaborator of eight books on health and medicine for general audiences, including 50 Essential Things To Do When the Doctor Says ‘It’s Diabetes.’

I currently work for the New York Times Regional Media Group, writing and editing feature articles on food, history, culture, travel and the arts for Gainesville Magazine and the Gainesville Sun.

I’ve also coordinated the development and launch of numerous start-up publications. I was the principal consultant and editor for two national launches: Women’s Health Digest and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ guide for menopausal women, Pause.

I am a former full-time faculty member and occasional adjunct instructor at the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications, where I’ve taught feature writing, editing and magazine management. I’ve also served as the faculty advisor for the student-produced Orange & Blue Magazine. At UF, I’ve mentored hundreds of students and helped many of them publish their first newspaper or magazine feature article.

In 2009 and 2010, I co-directed the Anhinga Writers’ Studio Summer Workshops in Gainesville, Florida. I offer courses and workshops on newspaper and magazine feature writing, book proposals, query letters and more. Join me in Provence, France this summer for a week-long workshop on travel writing. You’ll spend part of each day touring the area’s picturesque villages, sampling the food and wine, taking in the sights, and interviewing local shop owners, chefs, vintners, and artists. The other part of your day will be spent learning how to shape your travel experiences into a marketable feature article for print or online media.
