On Writing

The articles I wrote for these trade publications illustrate the marketing aspects of my work as both an editor and an independent journalist. This article, which appeared in the July 2012 issue of The Writer, offers insider tips on how to shape and pitch ideas for travel articles from an assigning editor.

I pitched this article on how to write a nonfiction book proposal to Writer’s Digest in 2001. Although the magazine editors turn down 90 percent of the queries they receive, I structured this story around three simple questions my literary agent once posed to me: ‘So what?’ ‘Who cares?’ ‘Who are you?’ That approach turned out to be a winner.
